What I Lived, Loved and Read the Week of 12.26.11

Hey Babes,

I hope you had a fabulous week! Happy Post- Chanukah and  Happy Post- Christmas week. I can't freaking believe that Christmas came and went already (GASP!) I began my preparation in typical late fashion and it all came together okay. Now there's nothing left to do but prepare for the new year. Check out what I lived, loved and read during the week of 12.26.11:

  • I cant wait until my hair grows so that I can do this(going out, not to work. Thanks. :-) ):

Lots of love,

Time to Get it Together

Back to the Gym Babes. This was is a holiday season filled with tasty, oh so tasty food, lots of rest and relaxation and very little exercise. Needless to say, if I want this 5K to come to fruition and I want to shed the extra pounds I've packed on since moving to Brooklyn, then I need to get my act together, head back into the gym and get running, lifting and generally moving. THIS article from US News on getting off your booty post-holiday is an oldie, but a goodie. Straight to the point. Get moving!

My plan of action today? I need to get my endurance back up and see if I have any muscle left after being so lazy over this Christmas holiday.
  • 1 hour on the Precor Elliptical doing Glute 2- level 10
  • 45 minutes of weight lifting
    • leg extensions (4 sets of 12)
    • leg curl (4 sets of 12)
    • leverage squats (4 sets of 12)
    • 15 lb hip extensions (3 sets of 20)
  •  lots and lots and lots of stretching- probably 30 minutes of stretching in total
I hadn't realized until writing it down, how absurd it is that I don't do upper body weights. This is something that I have been doing for several months now, but I think its time to start incorporating some upper body weights into my plan so... updates to follow.

Lots of love, Jessy

Alicia Keys in Isabel Willow High-Top Sneakers (Alternative)

Alicia Key's Isabel Marant Sneakers (Alternative)

I love Alicia's kicks and they reminded me that sneakers don't always equate to fuddy duddy. Sorry, no offense to Swizz and Egypt; They looked nice too. lol

I found an affordable alternative to her high-tops that I'm looking forwards to testing out.

Happy 1 Month Birthday!

Happy Birthday! Friday 12/23 marks the 1 month anniversary of my TWA. Since my big chop, my regimen has changed a bit because I tried different products to see what worked best for me.

Shea Moisture Curling Souffle- FAIL.
Shea Moisture Replenishing DT-WIN.
Suave Naturals Apple Conditioner- WIN.
Burt's Bees Super Shiny GrapeFruit Conditioner- SEMI FAIL.
Cantu Shea Butter- WIN.
Curls Curl Refresher-WIN.
Eco-styler Olive Oil Gel- WIN.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard- OVERPRICED SEMI-WIN.
Aussie Moist- WIN.
Jamaican Black Castor Oil- WIN.
Curls Pomade- WIN.

Current Routine
I co-wash with suave naturals Or Aussie Moist about 3 times a week. After the co-wash, I apply Cantu Shea Butter Leave in and seal with JBCO. I then apply Eco-Styler and roll my palms in a small circular motion to define the coils. After lightly defining the coils, I shingle select areas that still look frizzy with additional Eco-Styler. I spritz with water throughout the process to keep it moist until I'm finished working. This works for my daily styling if my TWA.

On the non-wash days, I refresh with Curls refresher spray or water. If I don't feel like I have time to properly do my hair in the morning it becomes a DT day and I apply a DT under a plastic cap with a hat on top. Fortunately my office environment is very relaxed, so hats are not a problem for me. I don't currently have set wash days or DT days. I just co-wash on any morning I have time, DT if it starts to feel dry and at least once a week, often more.

I've seen the average 1/2 inch of growth I usually see every month. I had to stop taking Viviscal after 4 consecutive months to divert funds to the holidays. I plan to start it again after the new year but ideally would like to find a cheaper alternative.
Hey Sugar Lips,
I... Now...Own... Every... Color...  For three dollars each, I couldnt resist. They last forever and theyre not thin and watery like some other cheap stains I've tried. Love em!

Lots of Love,

Jessy

Happy Thursday Bombshell, With NYE around the corner, I've already decided that my favorite color, GOLD, will be front and center, but its metallic stepsibling, silver shouldn't completely get the shaft. Maybe this will be my NYD outfit. Even second rate colors deserve a little love. :-)

Devil On My Shoulder

I could say that I failed yesterday but that's a defeatist's statement. I won't be defeated but I also won't make any excuses, I succumb to the devil on my left shoulder who said " that burning in your chest means you should stop. There's always tomorrow." We can be our own worst enemy sometimes oftentimes. Shortly after my premature stop I texted hubby that I can't train for something by not finishing it. That's clearly counter-training. So I definitely get the importance of finishing.

Workout: Run
Date: Dec 17, 2011
Distance: 2.43 mi
Duration: 22:14

I am still deciding what 5K to run first.... I should make a decision  by NYE.

Freak out?

Freak out?

So I've gotten more broken hairs than usual in the last 48 hours. Four to be exact. Before you judge me... realize that since my BC on 11/23/11, I have had virtually NO breakage. So this is a tad bit alarming. I examined them pretty closely to distinguish left over relaxed ends that have broken free from my virgin curlies, but it's hard to tell. Is this my first experience with my hair communicating to me how it feels about my regimen, or am I over reacting and looking way too hard into 4 pieces?

Other naturalistas, whats realistic breakage for healthy 4A hair?

Let's the 5K training begin!!

Let's the 5K training begin!!

Yesterday, 12/14 I ran 3.46 miles in 39:38. Today I ran 3.43 miles in 34:04!
I'm so proud of myself because even though I'm not running race worthy times, I made it the full way through Prospect Park both times. I did not stop and with the help of my girl Dannielle, an amazing runner, I already started shaving time. We're going to have to make this a daily habit. Hopefully the cold weather doesn't impede my progress.

Now I just need to make a calendar of races I can try when spring rolls around...
Runners, please send me some suggestions!!

Stuck

I've been so s t u c k. I started my current fitness regimen about four months ago and I have seen results but I've gotten so bored. Today I kicked it into high gear and got back on the horse.
I'm up 14 lbs from when I lost 40 in 2010. Some people do keep their resolutions you know! I'm sure part of this is muscle weight but I'm sure part of it is due to consistently overeating. I mean, no one is perfect; not even a calorie counting neurotic like me. And by overeating, no, I don't mean eating a few extra cherry tomatoes. I legitimately had a lot of take out, a lot of fried food and I looked the other way when my Lose It totals went into the red (deep into the red... )

So here I am in December 2011 at 134. I started at 160 on January 4th 2010. I made it to 120 and last weighed in at 120 in May when I moved to Brooklyn and got a little slack with my habits. Let's get me back to 120.

God willing, I can do this by March 2012.

Lots of love,

Jessy

Tasty for Less: Red Rooster Harlem

Entrees ranging from $20-40

Okay. So I failed to take a picture. Again. I know. I will stamp it into my palm: "Take a picture before you stuff your face." Okay, so Red Rooster was not cheap. It wasn't my most expensive dinner but it wasn't the cheapest either. Hubby and I splurged a little for our anniversary Wednesday night. Comparatively speaking I don't spend a lot on dinners out when you look at the rest of NYC's twenty somethings but I eat out frequently. Most times, I find the best little known inexpensive gems for a nice dinner for any occasion, but sometimes the value is not in spending as little as possible but in having the best possible experience for what you do spend. When I received the recommendation to try Red Rooster, I didn't know what to expect but I found it was a good deal and I can definitively tell you that it was DELICIOUS. I can also tell you that the good service for the price we paid was enough to qualify this as an excellent value.

I started my meal with the creole grits side as an appetizer and it was a real mixed bag, chock full of tender shrimp and sausage and topped with a delicious toasted cheese cracker that I (shamefully) gobbled up too quickly to get a good look at. It was a whole new take on grits that hadn't experienced before. I Loved it.
In addition to the grits, we had the corn bread which in a world full of Jiffy, cake- like, too dry to swallow, diabetes-inducing corn bread, was a heavenly delight. I think the whole restaurant moved in slow motions and classical music played when I sank my teeth into it. It had a nice kick and was moist and buttery throughout. NO. Not just buttered on top. It was almost like it was infused with buttery cornbread juices. I'm still trying to understand how to make moist cornbread. I honestly don't think I've experienced it before, so this was an real "pause and savor" moment for me.

Our main course was the salmon, which we devoured. Hubby and I were like two sharks on a school of two innocent little salmon at our table (perhaps not quite, but my imaginations remembers it just like that) lol. You know what I mean. It got quiet at the table and we were momentarily only focused on our plates. The salmon was delicately cooked to my desired tenderness but the competition between the dual spicy and sweet flavors led to an overbearing flavor explosion that was a bit much for my taste. Individually both are orgasmicly delicious, but together, it seemed like both flavors were competing for which would be strongest, which lead to the overshadowing of the delicate, buttery flavor of salmon that I prefer. Boring? Ehh, sue me. Sometimes the simple things work for me.

Our shared side dish was the rice and peas entree, which was an aromatic, eclectic mixture that was bursting with flavor you could taste before it even hit your palette. It really was delicious and so fragrant. I loved it.
I think that  attentive service, friendly and kind staff and nice ambiance usually wins me over far and beyond the food at any restaurant. Am I breaking all of the foodie rules by putting those first? Probably. Lol. That being said, Red Rooster was a winner for having good service, but I guess the delicious food helps too.

Overall 4/5 stars: I'll definitely be back.

I'd love to know if you've tried it and what you thought.

Lots of love,

Jessy

Tasty for Less: The Speakeasy

I have got to get better at taking a picture of my plate before I dive in!

Here's the quick breakdown on the new restaurant Hubby and I tried last night via a Groupon deal: $29 for dinner for two including two appetizers, entrees and desserts, The Speakeasy.

The restaurant which appeared to seat maybe 30-40 guests, with an addition ten to twenty at the bar, was... E M P T Y. Okay- not completely empty, but We were the only people seated at the tables with five people at the bar. It was 9 PM on a Thursday night, and I didn't expect it to be that quite. Nonetheless, there's always the benefit of fast seating right? Part of the enjoyment of eating out for me is the people watching but last night I didn't have much to watch.

We were seated near the front window by our kind and attentive waiter/bartender/host (a man with many hats). Our corner booth was comfy, although it was quite chilly. Enough about the temperature though-- on to the food! We dined on the fried calamari and cesar salad appetizers, both of which were delicious. My calamari was way more flavorful than the garden variety bland Italian or Thai restaurant style I've been finding lately. It had quite a bit of kick, which was awesome. The caesar salad was delicious, by Hubby's account. He gobbled it up before I could ask to try a bite. He is a tough critic who only eats what he knows and praises very few dishes. He praised that salad, which was shocking, coming from him. We both then enjoyed the steak with garlic mashed potatoes. The steak had good flavor and was cooked to a tender perfection. The mashed potatoes were buttery and creamy. We were both pleased with the taste but not the amount of fat that was left on the steak. We finished off our meal with the peach and blueberry cobbler. It left me wanting something more. Something about it screamed "massed produced", "previously frozen", and "possibly not made on-site". It didn't taste bad but I didn't think it matched the rest of the meal.

Overall, I enjoyed the meal. I would come back just for the calamari alone but I would get it to go. It was far two quiet in there for us to speak above a whisper without interrupting everyone else's conversations. Maybe I'll pass by on another night and see if its more lively.

BlueprintLuxe Score: 3/5 stars :-)
